In this workshop, we will obliterate the most common reasons for feeling stuck with a short musical idea, discover tangible tools and workflows to effortlessly sketch out full track structures, and crafting engaging dynamic journeys that retain the listener’s attention. We will go through techniques for creating variations of your themes, writing secondary or contrasting song sections, turning one musical idea into many different song sections, and ensuring that we are creating an interesting composition from beginning to end – starting with just one idea.

Here’s the workshop outline:

  • Track Structure Basics
    In the beginning of the workshop, we will look at what a good track structure really does, the important characteristics we find in great compositions, and common mental and physical blocks that keep us stuck in the loop stage, unable to flesh out and finish songs. We will look at the benefits of being able to effortlessly structure out compositions, and the tools and methods we need to understand in order to get there with as little frustration as possible.

     

  • Understanding Contrast, Dynamics and Growth
    In this part of the workshop, we will dive into the fascinating topics of human hearing and how our brains have evolved to process sound, and why this impacts how we hear and create music. We will then look at the concepts of contrasts, dynamics and growth in this context, and look at how you can utilize this to your benefit and create engaging track structures that keep the listener’s attention. We’ll also discover techniques to turn one theme into a multitude of musical material, how to craft effective secondary and contrasting themes, and other tools to easily create various sections of our song from just one idea. 
  • Song Structure Guidelines 
    After mastering the tools and techniques we need, we will look at a variety of song structures from both contemporary and classical works, and look at what makes them so effective, when they are suitable, and certain things we need to keep in mind for each. We will learn about various ways to structure your track based on the context of your piece, what it’s for, and where you want the musical journey to go. 
  • Creating A Full Track Structure Sketch
    In the final part of the workflow, we will get our hands dirty and create an outline for an entire track structure, with contrasting themes, intros, outros, breaks etc – starting with just one musical idea. We will create a bunch of musical ideas from our starting loop, and structure this into a full track structure, and even dive into harmonic techniques and tricks we can utilize to spice up our compositions. 
At the end of the workshop, you should feel confident in your ability to tackle more or less any musical idea and turn it into a captivating composition!
