Module 1: Introduction & Basic Principles
We are starting off the course with an introduction to the MEHARYTE method, and fundamental knowledge to craft powerful arrangements for the string ensemble. explaining the history and anatomy of the string instruments, how they are played, and why it matters, as well as crucial overtone and chord structure knowledge.
We will explore topics such as:
- How to utilize the MEHARYTE framework
- The history and anatomy of the string instruments, how they are played – and why it’s crucial to know!
- Crucial chord structure and knowledge of the overtones
Module 2: Mastering The MEHARYTE Method
In the second module of the course, we will get into the practical aspect of looking at different ways to utilize the MEHARYTE method to craft arrangements of different complexities, looking at a variety of applications and techniques you can implement straight away.
We cover topics such as:
- Turning a piano sketch into a simple string arrangement
- Adding harmonic movement and melodic fillers
- A range of simple and advanced string textures
- Giving the melody to the celli instead of the violins
- Creating rhythmic movement
- Combining everything together
- … and much more!
Module 3: MEHARYTE In Action
In the third module, after looking at isolated techniques and principles, we will look at the MEHARYTE method in action – creating an actual orchestration from scratch, step by step.
We cover the following topics:
- Going from a piano sketch to a complete orchestration inside a notation software like Sibelius
- Going from a sketch to a final orchestration inside your DAW
- How to put the MEHARYTE method into action in any scenario or context
- The thought processes behind both vertical and horizontal development of your orchestrations to create a captivating musical piece
- Practical applications of all principles taught in Module 2
- The entire workflow of starting, and finishing a full orchestration of a musical piece, starting with a sketch, both in your DAW and/or with notation.
Module 4: Utilizing The Entire Orchestra (Bonus)
After we have covered all the bases of how to craft powerful string arrangements, we will look at how you can utilize the power and colours of brass and woodwind instruments to further develop your arrangements and access new flavors in your writing – all following the MeHaRyTe framework.
In this final module you will see:
- How to go from a piano sketch to an arrangement featuring both strings, brass and woodwinds efficiently
- How to balance all the instruments and create good blends
- Expressive use of MIDI CC’s, modulation and articulations
- Tips and tricks to get a lush, grandiose sound in your DAW
- The workflow of creating an entire orchestration featuring the different orchestral families, from sketch to completion
