MASSIVE ELECTRONIC PRODUCTION

by BigJerr

Utilizing powerful synth and bass elements in our music can be a powerful tool in order to create a larger than life sound. But, as anyone who has tried to stack a few patches together has experienced, achieving a powerful and balanced production isn’t easy. From sound choices, to layering and stacking, to eq-ing and processing, there’s a lot to think about.

Maybe you are seeking to create future bass inspired bangers such as Illenium and Said The Sky, or maybe you just want to bring such elements into music for media and advertising in order to create massive contemporary soundscapes.

In this course, Ableton certified trainer Jerry DiPhillippo aka BigJerr will take you through every step of the way in order to create massive electronic productions, all the way from sound selection through the final mix and processing of a full track.

Thing covered in course:

  • Stealing like an artist in order to get awesome results quickly
  • Building an entire loud & powerful track from scratch, step by step
  • Understanding the mixing and mastering process for max loudness and power

Module 2:
The Basics

In this module, you’ll get an introduction to what mixing loud even means, and explore concepts such as LUFS, loudness meters, and how we use these tools to measure and tweak the loudness of our tracks to get an ideal result. We’re also going to cover a bunch of common issues that hold us back from getting loud and powerful tracks and how to fix it, whether it is drums not punching through, chords sounding weak, smashing the limiter and wreaking havoc on your mix, bass too loud or too weak, vocals not sitting right in the mix, and so on. We’ll also go into volume control, mid/side processing, limiting vs clipping, spatial placement, powerful EQ tips, setting up your routing, and other processing tips that will be crucial to get an awesome result.

Module 3:
Referencing

Reference tracks can act like a north star for our journey throughout producing music, giving us an objective reference for everything from instrumentation, to mix and loudness, to track structure and energy. In this module, we’ll explore how to use a reference track in a smart way, why it’s a good idea to use one, and how we can «steal like an artist» (and what it even means) in order to get better results and speed up our workflow.

Module 4:
Building A Track

In this module, we will look at building an entire track, from the intro, to the chord progressions, drums, percussion and fills, basses and pads, creating a drop, and much more. We’ll look at different consideration for each section, the instrumentation, creating the different sounds, making each sound powerful and ensuring they stand out, and setting yourself up for success in getting a massive and powerful mix.

Module 5:
Mixing

After putting together the entire track, we will dive into the mixing stage and look at the differences between cleaning and shaping vs mixing. We will go through different topics such as gain staging, and layering, kick and snare processing, drum mixing, synths and vocal production and much more. We’ll also be making sure the biggest sections of our tracks stand out and really hit hard, and building the rest of the track around this – something that is crucial in any track of any genre.

Module 6:
Supersaw Processing

In the sixth module, we’re going to dive deeper into one specific area, which is layering our super saw synths and the processing of these elements. In Future Bass, the super saws and chord elements really carry a lot of the power – and we will look at how we can stack chords, mid basses, subs, white noise and leads in order to get a HUGE wall of sound. The lessons learned here can also be applied to other similar elements in other styles in order to get a massive production.

Module 7:
Vocal Production

In this module, we will look at the vocal production of our tracks. Vocals can be tricky, and the vocal mix can sometimes be the difference between a pro and radio/licensing ready track and something that sounds more amateur-like. We will go through cleaning and prepping the vocals, fixing issues, dealing with pitch and time edits, processing and special FX to make the vocals really pop and sit right in our mix.
