Work in progress from taking the 3D for Artists Course by Walid Feghali

3D is such an amazing tool to use for Concept Art and Illustration. I’ve been using it for my professional artworks and illustrations for over a decade now and I just love this workflow. I wanted to share my knowledge with other artists, so I decided to create this course – 3D for Artists.

You get great Perspective, Lighting, and Compositions, and the interactivity makes it so much fun. The sky is really the limit!

And the best part? Blender is a completely free and open-source 3D software!

So in this highly awaited self-paced online course, 3D For Artists I’ll teach you everything you need to know as an absolute beginner in 3D to confidently and quickly use Blender for your art – all the way from the first steps of navigating, modeling & texturing assets to setting up lighting, epic scene layouts, and rendering.

Finally, we’ll even paint over our renders at the end to create stunning artworks. So let’s begin this awesome journey through the world of 3D for art!

3D for Artist Course

In the 3D For Artists course, not only will you learn how to make and modify assets like rocks, weapons, water, pillars, materials, etc., but also how to create epic environment art like the one below, which is one of the artworks we’ll be making using Blender:

Shining Fjords

Your imagination sets the limit for what kind of artworks and concepts you can create with this workflow!

“But 3D seems so complicated… I just want to create nice art!”

I know, I know… this is what I felt in the beginning too.

And being an artist without much experience with 3D, I wanted to get to the “art part” of it all. I needed to get quick perspective, lighting setup, scene layouts, and renders so I could work on my artworks for clients.

I needed a way to work fast, creatively, and also have fun while doing it. Thing is, 3D is actually quite straightforward and even easy once you crack the code and understand it.

So through years and years of using many types of 3D software, I’ve developed a great simplified workflow that allows me to create scenes and renders quickly and effortlessly that I can use in both my clients’ and my personal artworks.

I know many artists want to be able to tell their stories and create realistic concepts, just like me.

That’s why I decided to put together this unique online course 3D For Artists, teaching you the basics of 3D, from the very beginning all the way to creating beautiful finished renders and artworks.

Oh, and my art student Eben will be there with us, as I’m teaching him throughout the course videos, so you’ll see his improvements, questions and comments as well!

What The Students Say About 3D For Artists

“I was really amazed at how quickly I was able to navigate through Blender after learning from Walid.”

I had barely used 3D at all and it seemed so complicated at first, but once I took the 3D For Artists course and learned this effective and simple workflow with Blender, it was actually really simple and fun!

Now I can create really cool projects and scenes in Blender that I use as bases and even nearly finished pieces of artwork right off the bat.

Thank you for showing me the awesome power of 3D and Blender!

3D for Artists by Walid Feghali. Module 1: Intro to 3D and Blender

Module 1: Intro to 3D and Blender

In this first module, we will learn the very basics of Blender and 3D overall, how texture maps work, navigation around in Blender, basic modeling and sculpting, and so on. Just to dip your feet in the water and set you up for the upcoming modules.

  • Why use 3D in the first place?
  • How 3D can be a powerful tool for artists
  • Basics of Blender, navigation and layout
  • Basic object editing & modeling
  • Create your first asset: Ancient Pillar
  • Using various tools & sculpting in 3D
  • How to use and set up texture & UV maps

  • Create a full scene from scratch
  • Extended asset creation
  • Customize textures and light sources
  • Learn to make realistic atmosphere with volumetrics
  • Set up cameras for interesting perspective angles

Module 3: Epic Landscape Creation

This is where you'll learn about outdoors scenes – we'll create really cool mountains, rocks, go deeper into the Shader Editor and texturing, creating God Rays, how to turn a scene into night, making fire, water, and lots of stuff. We'll also work with some characters and character assets, like creating a sword.

  • Set up a vast, realistic landscape scene
  • Build naturalistic assets like rocks and hills
  • Learn to add dynamic lighting and God Rays
  • Atmospheric perspective & more volumetrics
  • Add and pose characters to create story in your art
  • Create assets such as a swords and fire
  • How to set up day & night scenes

Module 4: Composition & Rendering

In Module 4, we'll explore a different take on the scene we made in Module 3, and make it even more epic, and just prepare it for final rendering and paintover. All the final tweaks and composition exploration happen here, and we'll look at rendering and render passes.

  • Set up the perfect composition in Blender
  • Experiment with lighting to highlight key areas and create expressive visuals
  • Learn to create simple and realistic volumetric water
  • Rendering settings and speeding up your renders
  • Find the final shot for your render

Module 5: 3D Paintover

In the final module here we will take what we made in Blender, throw it into Photoshop for some quick compositing and start painting over it for our final illustration, Shining Fjords. You'll learn some cool techniques for taking away the "3D look" and making it look more artistic and painterly, so this is where we create our final illustration.

  • Understand render passes and how they work
  • Composing renders inside of Photoshop
  • Painting techniques to remove the "3D-ness"
  • Giving artistic expression to your artwork
  • Using effective brush work
